TRENTO/TRIENT: THE HIDDEN GEM IN NORTHERN ITALY
Nestled between towering Alpine peaks and cradled by the glistening River Adige, this city is a captivating blend of Italian charm and Austrian precision. Trento’s past resonates through its stunning architecture, while its lively piazzas and café culture invite you to savor every moment.
We begin in Piazza Duomo, Trento’s majestic city square, its vibrant heart, surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and the city’s most important religious site. Imagine the splendor of the past as you stand in front of the towering Cathedral of San Vigilio, where momentous decisions of the Council of Trent were made. Look around and see the Renaissance frescoes adorning the surrounding buildings, each telling stories of Trento’s colorful history.
Passing a devil’s palace, the wide streets for the nobles and a little further the narrow streets for the craftsmen and their families, an old shop, an elegant cafe and we reach the Buonconsiglio Castle, (outside visit)- impressive medieval fortress of the 13th century and refined residence of learned prince bishops.
2 hours guided walking tour Euro 145,00
BUONCONSIGLIO CASTLE
The tour begins with the oldest wing of the castle, called “Castelvecchio”, a spartan, austere fortress of the 13th century, which was transformed into a more elegant and comfortable castle in the 14th century. The rooms of the Prince Bishops and the Hall of the Bishops allow visitors to see the little-known figure of the “Prince Bishop”, protagonist in a centuries-long feud between the Pope and the Empire.
The tour continues through the Palazzo Magno built by Bernardo Clesio from 1528, with the aim of making Trento competitive with other Italian courts. Wonderful frescoes by Dosso , Battista Dossi, Girolamo Romanino and Marcello Fogolino accompany us on the tour of the scholar’s public and private chambers.
